Profit - Welcomed or Disdained by Ancient Romans ?

چکیده

"Salve Lucrum," an inscription embedded in the threshold of Casa di Sirico, a large mansion in Pompeii, raises an interesting question. "Salve" is a term used by the Romans as a greeting; thus the phrase can be translated as "Hail Profit!" This greeting can be contrasted to the view, suggested by some contemporaneous literature, that the Roman elite distanced themselves from commercial activity. One well-known example is Cicero's statement that "Vulgar we must consider those also who buy from wholesale merchants to retail immediately; for they would get no profits without a great deal of downright lying; and verily, there is no action that is meaner than misrepresentation" (Cicero, 1961, p. 153).
